Day Trips from York — Whitby, the Moors, the Dales & Castle Howard

The four day trips that actually run from York — Whitby and the Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, the Herriot country and Castle Howard — with honest prices, and which (only one) the Visit York Pass covers.

Updated August 2026

York’s location is half its value: the coast, two national parks and England’s finest baroque house all sit within a day’s swing. One honesty note before the list — guided day tours are separate bookings, not Visit York Pass inclusions. The pass covers the city’s attractions (and Castle Howard’s admission); the coaches out are their own tickets.

Whitby and the North York Moors

The classic. Abbey headland, the 199 steps, fishing harbour, and the moors crossing both ways. The North Moors and Whitby tour4.8/5 from 991 reviews, $78 — is the best-proven run. Dracula pilgrims: the literary case for Whitby is a page of its own — the town is Stoker’s, not Hollywood’s.

The Yorkshire Dales

Stone villages, waterfalls and the landscape All Creatures Great and Small films. The Yorkshire Dales tour (4.8/5 from 560 reviews, $110) is the general version; the filming-locations angle has its own guide with the ACGAS-specific tour.

Castle Howard — the one the pass DOES cover

Fifteen miles out, and the exception to the rule above: the pass covers Castle Howard’s £18.95 admission — what it does not cover is the transport, and there is no train. The pass-plus-transport arithmetic is here.

Herriot country

Thirsk and the northern Dales, book-first: the Herriot day trip (4.8/5, $80).

How to build the days

The pattern that works: city days on the pass, one coach day in the middle. Two pass days packed with the Minster, Dungeon, chocolate and the river more than earn the pass; the worked math is here. Put Whitby or the Dales between them as its own ticket, and Castle Howard inside a pass day if you have wheels.
